STEM TRIANGLE: The three STEM Triangle schools -- Ascension, Nativity and St. Columbkille -- are all located within a 5-mile radius of one another in South Los Angeles, a community beleaguered by poverty, crime and struggling public schools. For nearly 100 years, these three Catholic schools have provided the positive alternative to these negative factors, providing pockets of hope, stability and opportunity for upward mobility through education for thousands of inner-city children.
Project Description: A Three Year Plan
Thanks to the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation we formed the STEM Triangle Initiative designed to increase the study and awareness of STEM subjects, with the goal of creating greater proficiency and affinity of these subjects while removing the fear and dislike many students have of them. To accomplish this, we have designed a three-year rollout to more fully integrate STEM into our schools year-round, both during school and through fun after school enrichment activities, to make STEM engaging and relatable to every age group and every level of learner, from Kindergarten to Middle School.
The STEM TRIANGLE Initiative is a pilot program launched in three inner-city, low-income Catholic K-8 schools to enhance and augment the delivery of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts, to ensure the nearly 1,000 students in these schools have access to a 21st century education on par with those in more affluent communities.
The goal is to create a culture of STEM in each school and develop a passion, proficiency and affinity of these critical subjects in our students from a very early age, so that they will self-select the pursuit of these subjects as they go further in their education.
The Program: The STEM Triangle Initiative involves three distinct yet inter-linking strategies:
Student Extra-curricular engagement opportunities - In conjunction with our partners Caltech, Loyola High School and USC, we offer several After School clubs - Robotics, Coding and Digital Media Arts; as well as Field Trips to expand our students' horizons.
Curriculum Enhancement - We aim to bring the best current practices to STEM core subjects, using up-to-date technology to deliver information effectively at all learning levels.
Professional Development - In partnership with Loyola Marymount University, we incorporate development and training opportunities both on-site, such as with LMU's innovative CMAST Teacher Leader program, as well as off-site via conferences and meetings designed to enhance the collaboration and idea-sharing between faculty in the three schools.
