St. Columbkille School’s curriculum is aligned to the standards of the state of California and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Instruction is given in the core areas of Religion, Math, Social Studies, Science (includes health) and English Language Arts (includes reading, writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary). Standards utilized can be found on the Archdiocesan website. The school is currently moving toward an implementation of the Common Core State Standardsfor English Language Arts and Math and the Next Generation Science Standards. In order to educate the whole student, classes in Music, Physical Education, and Technology are given weekly. Art is also incorporated across the curriculum.
Title 1 services provided through LAUSD, help students in the areas of reading and math. Students who need extra assistance attend Title 1 classes during the school day with a reading or math specialist in small groups or in some cases individualized attention. An integration of technology throughout the school week, also allows students to practice math and reading skills at their own pace. Volunteers from Loyola Marymount University help tutor students weekly throughout the school day and after school.
Various extra-curricular activities help support student learning and achievement as well. Academic clubs include: Mustang Readers Club, Rockin’ Readers Book Club, Academic Decathlon, After-School Homework Help, Jr. High Homework Club, and the Math Club. These activities are geared to either help students who need extra assistance or who may need an extra challenge.
Many times, a student may have problems that affect their academic performance. School counselors are available five days a week to help students with study skills, conflict resolution skills, or emotional stresses that may affect their grades and/or behavior.
